City’s My Clean Green Home exhibition shows learners how to live more sustainably

The City today, 21 April 2023, hosted a group of 45 learners from Montevideo Primary School at the My Clean Green Home exhibition at Green Point Urban Park to show how small actions can make the world of difference.

The Grade 7s spent the day at the Smart Living Education Centre and the full-sized green exhibit home learning about energy, water and waste. They toured the house and engaged with topics including sustainable living, sustainable usage of natural resources and environmental awareness. The net zero carbon home gives visitors of all ages the opportunity to walk through and experience this sustainable way of living.

'Spending time here allows visitors a chance to walk through and experience for themselves what life could be like in a net zero carbon home. Our young people are true influencers and the more they learn, the more power they hold to demand change for the future they want,' said the City's Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.

'Children learn through sensory experiences and play such as today's edutainment session about how to live in a more sustainable way. It is a privilege to be part of their learning journey as they become our future climate heroes.

'I am honoured to again spend time at this future-fit home. With no- and low-investment, all residents can act to make even small changes within their homes to increase their energy, water and waste efficiency. As part of the City's climate action, we are aiming to be carbon neutral by 2050 and the City has committed that all new buildings in Cape Town will be net zero carbon by 2030. While net zero carbon homes seem as if they would be difficult to create, this exhibit home shows that the technologies and building techniques already exist and increasingly within reach of the average household,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Councillor Beverley van Reenen.
